Chapter 3 Science Test and Unit 4 Math Test

Parents,

I have never seen students so excited to work on science projects! They have been creating PowerPoint presentations, digital stories, Flipcharts (whiteboard technology), making posters and brochures to show what they learned about storms. Ask them to share their creations with you.

This Friday, there will be the chapter 3 test in Weather. On Wednesday and Thursday students will be studying for this test by reviewing these terms and concepts.
1.   Terms:
Weather satellites   cumulus clouds   stratus clouds       cirrus clouds
Weather forecaster   air mass       front           cold front
Warm front       thunderstorm       flash flood       hurricanes   tornadoes
2.   Know the cloud types and what the weather will be for each type
3.   Explain the 3 types of information brought to us by weather satellites
4.   Understand the major storms, how they form, and story safety
5.   Use a weather map to predict weather.

As always, you help at 11:40- 12:10 daily to work with students on math facts is appreciated.

* There will be a math test on unit 4 Tuesday November 22rd. A study guide will be provided soon.

Both classes should be commended for their excellent study efforts for the Chapter 2 test in science. The average grade was 93.5%! Kids, congratulations on your efforts and diligence. The weather instruments you brought in were fantastic! We begin the last chapter in Weather this week. I am forecasting plenty of sunny days ahead!

Unit 3 in math will be coming to a close within the next week- so continue to practice you multiplication skills each night for 10 minutes to improve your scores! There will be another help session for POW's this Wednesday at recess time from 10:30 to 10:45. Please make arrangements for a sub if you are a library helper. Mrs. Petrilla has assured me that this is fine with her if you give her advance notice.

Math Unit 3 and Science

Unit 3 in math emphasizes the importance of developing instant recall of math multiplication facts. Mastery of basic facts gives students surprising power in making quick estimates and operating with larger numbers. Daily drill is important to developing instant recall. Your support is appreciated!

We are nearing the end of Chapter 2 and a test should be at the end of this week.

9- 23 Update

Math: Great News! Students made excellent advances in math this past week. Unit 1 final test grades showed that students made wonderful progress. The average grade of both of my classes was an A- (92%) and this shows that students are working hard and performing well. We now begin Unit 2 which includes of data analysis. Students will be collecting, graphing and analyzing data.

Science: Chapter 1 final exam will be on Thursday 9-29 and students are preparing for it already. This past Friday they "taught" a topic to a small group of students. The research-based learning theory (See illustration) says that students remember 10% of what they read and 90% when they have to teach others. They will act as teacher many times to ensure they have learned important concepts. This week students will also complete a study guide in class and bring that home to study. They will have some extended response questions that involve writing that they can practice for at home.

9-16 Update

I can't be more pleased with the progress our students have made these first couple of weeks of school. Students are familiar with daily routine and are taking responsibility for their learning.

I am so very proud of these accomplishments.

Unit 1 in Math is almost finished. On Friday 9-16, we completed our first test. There will be an additional in-class project as an additional means of having students show what they have learned. Unit 2 will focus on using numbers and organizing data. Please click on the Math tab at the top of this page for a link to homework help, activities to challenge and also to reteach math concepts.

In Science. students just learned about the layers of our atmosphere and what the term greenhouse effect is. The chapter 1 test will be next week (day not yet determined). Please click on the Science tab at the top of this page for some videos that we saw in class.
